The
National Treasures of Korea are a numbered set of artifacts, sites, and buildings which are recognized by
South Korea as having exceptional cultural value. Some of the national treasures are popular
tourist destinations.
The first list of Korean cultural treasures was established in 1938 under Japanese rule, and was modeled after the
Japanese National Treasures. The current list dates to
December 20,
1962 when it was made law by the ruling
military junta, although the list followed the original order made by the Japanese. Numerous amendments have been made to the list since that time, most recently in 2004. There are now 307 distinct entries on the list, some composed of a large number of sub-entries.
